This is a Thanksgiving Day post about being thankful for having people in our lives who love us, more than we are for things.
The ballad that I’ve chosen to compliment this post is:
In My Songs – Gerald Levert
According to Levert’s father, Eddie, his son, was working on this track before he left us. In My Songs, is a powerful ballad gone personal. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Levert composed this vivid choral script straight from the heart.
Unbeknownst to the artist, this is possibly his last and most fervent ballad of all time.
His goal for the melody seems to be to deliver an anthem worthy piece, about his experience with longing for true love. So, Levert is looking for a lover he can be thankful for, and not just on Thanksgiving day.
I don’t mind making you happy, I don’t mind making your day
Feels so good to give, But I never, never seem to get my way
I’m tired of waking up with nobody laying next to me (next to me)
I’m tired of being alone and everybody else is lovey dovey (lovey dovey)
I’m so tired of all y’all being happy but me, If I could only find a lover to sing about (oh oh)
When I sing my songs
Basically, if you don’t know you should be thankful to have somebody in your life who loves you, think again! Thanksgiving day is a special day that highlights the importance of being thankful. But, do you know the kind of things you should be thankful for? How about everything?
Are you thankful for the people in your life? Do you know that Love is not earned, you can’t tell yourself who you’re gonna love, and love is blind?
Contrary to popular belief, “the power behind what you change on the outside pales to the that in the wake of inner beauty.” It’s not about how you look on the outside, it’s about what people see on the inside.
Surely, the artist referenced above has crossed paths of many pretty women, yet none seem to have passed his test. His idea of a lover remains a ghost of a love, even while he continues to sing his songs! Gerald has yet to mention being thankful for any lover in this song?
To live and have not known true love is a heavy burden to bear, “one that may equate to not having lived at all.”
Levert provocatively croons these words, “if I could only find a lover to sing about in my songs?” He’s is no longer referring to some make believe lover created to boost CD sales. The day he wrote this number the script was flipped, the power of love came alive, as did its absence.
The words “waking up with nobody next to me” is a call for attention. Everybody doesn’t yearn for somebody to wake-up next to at the same time in life. However, when they do, the moment goes from a whisper to a scream!
Can you tell in this song, “In My Songs” that finding a lover was no longer optional?
Identifying reasons for being thankful may not be as difficult as you think. Humbling oneself is essential. When we’re “puffed up,” too full of ourselves, it’s impossible to recognize blessings in our lives. Blessings are not always obvious. Sometimes we have to go through hell before finding peace in a storm.
Life lessons show us how and why we should be thankful for everything, while reminding us that we came into this world with nothing.
Every time life rescues us from making future mistakes is another opportunity to be thankful. Acknowledge when there is food on a table to satisfy our hunger, and water to quench a thirst. These are just a few reasons to be thankful. Knowing that there are people who have neither, should make us realize how blessed we are as well.
Man seems remiss when attempting to explain why some people go without, suffer more than others, or become a “gone too soon.” Essentially, there are divine questions that will never be answered on earth.
So, let’s not focus on things we have no control over. Perhaps it’s more beneficial to lift up another, be a light in somebody’s darkness, and be a poster board for love.
